Edmonton and Holding. . .

We are in Edmonton, AB today and part of tomorrow, on our way to the Alaskan Convoy.  Yesterday, we started having truck troubles so today and at least 1/2 of tomorrow we are waiting to have new head gasket put in. That part was a mere $42.  It's lucky David could diagnosis the problem, fortunate that we could find a gasket, and fabulous we found a shop that would fit us in today or tomorrow.  David could have probably fixed it, but he worried about twisting off a bolt and then being stuck with another bigger problem so we have it in a shop.  Luckiest of all was the fact that were six motels within walking distance since our camper is locked up tonight in the shop until tomorrow morning.

We chugged into Edmonton this a.m. and the truck kept getting worse.  We did get to the west side where we were at the regional parts store for Bumper to Bumper that we were told yesterday, had an appropriate head gasket.  Next, we tried several places to discover a place that would help David do the  replacement.  A wonderfully helpful parts person at the International Truck service center, called several places and finally directed us to Canadian Tire that runs a comprehensive repair shop.  They promised to try and fit us in today, and if not today, tomorrow.  So we are having a very laid back day.  For the afternoon, we walked to Arby's for lunch and then sat in the waiting room with nice comfy chairs and the Olympics on and pleasant folks to chat with.   Finally, when the shop was closing, we packed a small bag and came to a pretty nice hotel called Sandman.  We will have a leisurely dinner, and nice rest, and refreshed we will be and ready to roll, as soon as the truck is tomorrow.

We had a lovely shower this morning and this afternoon. . .Ohioans and others, it seemed quite strange! While out to dinner last night, I decided to make lemonade out of this lemon kind of day, and took pictures of the various provinces' license plates.  The NW Territory bear was my inspiration and then we searched for more.  Not every day can one see these. . .so you are seeing them from afar.  I haven't figured out how to edit photos in my mini computer yet, so that is why you aren't seeing some of them close-up.  Oh well!

Below numbers it says "wild rose country"  we haven't seen a single wild rose!

  1. Hey mom, your tale sort of reminds me of waiting for the new water pump and head gasket on the CRX. What was that, 1989? Hope you have better luck from here out. Cheers,

  2. It seems as if you had a fairy godmother watching over you, waving her magic wand and making everything fit into place. You could write a story about it like the one about the girl who gave birth in a Walmart. What was its name? Anyway, all these people just welcomed her in and took care of her, just like people are taking care of you now. Enjoy the amenities and sleep tight.

  3. I am happy to hear that you found someone to make the needed repairs and found a nice place to stay and are having a relaxing day, in spite of the inconvenience of car (ambulance) trouble. I hope to see a picture of you and David smiling next to your repaired truck.

  5. If your mini computer can download You Tube videos, you might like one about a rescue of 3 cubs from a dumpster. Betsy said that the bears in Canada, where they have a cabin in MacGregor Bay, are having a hard time finding enough blueberries and other food to eat and are coming closer to the towns. On their island some people have hired a "bear killer" if one gets too close. She said it was just some young 3 year old who didn't know any better. Anyway, go to Wimp.com and enter "People rescue three bears stuck in dumpster." It's only about 2 minutes long and lets you know that there are also people who are "bear rescuers."
